I have answered the same questions about background checks you are asking today through hours of frustrating research. When I did my first online background check in June 2008, I had no clue where to begin and the choices seemed overwhelming.

Trying to locate a service I was comfortable with was an exercise in futility. It lasted several weeks and finally led to the conception of www.bestbackgroundcheck.org.

Background check services that yield no information or the wrong information altogether are a dime a dozen. The worst part? They don't tell you their records are incomplete.

I am very familiar with the frustration of trying to locate comprehensive service that is safe to use and know that most online services aren't worth your mouse-click.

All online criminal background check sites I know of proclaim themselves to be the best in the business. All review sites I know of proclaim the service they are promoting is the best.

One website after another offers the same rehashed lines about how 80% of background checks are scams, and that you should buy the one that I recommend because it will “find anything on anyone”.

Obviously, not everyone is right and not every service is the best. In fact it makes me tired seeing complete garbage being sold as a legitimate solution to a potentially serious problem.

In the meantime, no one is helping you answer those important questions you have. All they do is try to get your money.

Today, 2 years and over 3,000 hours later, I am testing online background check services to keep up with the ever changing options. Helping others get the most comprehensive service that is safe to use has become a full time job.

There is no website that offers real user feedback where you can compare online background check services. It's also extremely difficult to find a medium where you can ask specific questions regarding background checks.

I am aware of Ripoff Report and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) but have found they are somewhat unbalanced as they only deal with negative feedback. Through my research, I have found some negative publicity on these sites, which has been somewhat of a shock.

I have used the same intelligence outlined in the white paper to evaluate and choose top quality online background check companies. Each service has been researched and is legitimate. I communicate with managers from each company regularly to ensure you only receive the premium service you deserve.

To keep the integrity of this list, it includes only services that I have dealt with and have a good understanding of. To get on this list an online company has to meet my standards and there are few that do. I am also ready to give any one of them the boot if the need arises!

This is not one of those cynically-compiled lists where the author does a Google search and slaps something together with whatever looks good. I leave that to the garbage review sites.

Using these companies doesn't mean you will always receive exactly the records you are searching for. Avoid like a plague any service that proclaims they will “find anything on anyone”.

  1. www.USSearch.com is perhaps the most well known, and respected, provider of criminal records search, background checks, people search, phone number search and myriad other services. They have been indexing and providing comprehensive solutions since 1994. 7 million visitors pass through their website every month. Their reputation in the online community is excellent. For example the BBB give them an “A”. If a choice had to be made between the top 2 services available today, USSearch or Intelius, USSearch would be the winner due to their customer support and extensive, positive track record. Use USSearch if you need current and thorough records. We talked them into letting us offer you a 25% site-wide discount.
  2. www.Intelius.com was founded in 2003, and is a behemoth provider of criminal records search, phone and address search and more. They compete neck and neck with US Search in terms of quality and quantity of information. Together, Intelius and USSearch offer access to over 30 billion records. Nobody else even comes close to competing with these two services. However, Intelius has a tarnished public image due to some of their practices. But, almost all of the negative feedback on Intelius has to do with billing. This has stemmed from a $10 rebate they offer. If you opt for the rebate, part of the terms are a monthly membership, so read carefully. Use Intelius if you need current and comprehensive records. Get a 40% discount on a background check.
  3. www.BackgroundChecks.com is a well respected provider of criminal records search, background checks, people search, phone search and other products. They have been in business since 1999. They offer very specific solutions to practically every different type of background check from criminal records search to a dating background check. They aren't as aggressive as Intelius and USSearch in records indexing, but are great for various, specialized searches.
  4. www.Efindoutthetruth.com was started in 2001, is run by two private detectives, and claims the title of “background check superstore". They are the only recommended company to offer international background checks. Their myriad services will provide you with everything from criminal records search to email search and driving records. They offer not only background checks, but many security gadgets from door and window alarms to pepper spray and handcuffs. Their reputation in the online community is also excellent despite a few small hiccups from a few years ago. If you need to run more than 4 searches, let us know and we will arrange a discount for you.
  5. www.PeopleFinders.com is another okay service for conducting criminal records search, background checks, people search, and sex offender searches. There is one difference, they offer a free sex offender search membership. However, this company is slightly lacking when it comes to comprehensive and up-to-date results. They are a little less expensive and I suppose that is why. They will find most records, but don't expect them to be on par with the others above.
  6. www.NetDetective.com was founded in 1996 by HD Publishing Group. They are heavily advertised and serve many customers. Net Detective has a tarnished reputation in the online community, but they are definitely not all bad. If all you need to do is name, address, land line searches and some criminal records Net Detective will probably work for you as you can do as many as needed. They offer two membership options. The first is a basic 3 year membership which is really just a people search utility. The advanced membership includes more search options such as criminal records and background checks. I don't recommend them if you need the most current records available.

Through my research I have found that most reputable online background check services are basically the same. Paying more, over $80.00 for an automated background check, and $175 for an expert assisted background check will in all likelihood not get you a more thorough report.
