California County Fails to do Proper Criminal Background Check

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

Recently in Los Angeles county, California, a convicted rapist, Gariner Beasley, was allowed to return to work due to a breakdown in safeguards put in place to protect others, and keep person’s like him from obtaining a job as a health professional. His job, an X-ray technologist, allowed him to remain unsupervised with patients who were in “very vulnerable and compromised positions.”

According to a health department official, THREE safeguards failed, allowing a rapist back in to the same job he had been fired from.

First off, the county had a “do not send”list for temporary workers that he should have been on. This was not checked.

Second; a criminal background check, required by county policy, which would have immediately turned up the previous convictions, was not conducted.

Thirdly; and this is the most startling. He was not issued the proper credentials to work in the restricted area he was allowed into. Nobody noticed however, or didn’t care.

Previously, Gariner Beasley and 18 other employees had been fired from a clinic that is now under a different name and supervision. An audit at that clinic had uncovered criminal backgrounds on many the employees.

This is just another example of why one can never be too careful.

No one ran a new criminal background check, despite county policy requiring it. * The X-ray technologist was not issued identification he should have needed
