Texas Criminal Busted By Background Check – Sex Offender Arrested

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

In Lufkin, Texas on Monday (Feb 22, 2010) authorities arrested a man for failing to comply with sex offender registration requirements. Jeremy Michael Evers, 34, had moved from Wisconsin and failed to notify the Wood County Sheriff’s Department of his address change, which issued an arrest warrant.

The process that led to Evers’s arrest was set off when he tried to sign up with an online dating service. The site did a background check and discovered he had lied about a 2001 conviction for the sexual assault of a 15 year old girl. They notified the Texas Attorney General’s Fugitive Unit, which discovered the warrant and arrested Evers.

Evers had registered with Angelina County Sheriff’s Department after arriving in Lufkin, so no charges are being pressed from Texas. He will, however, be extradited to Wisconsin to face charges there. Investigators say that Evers had active accounts at several social networking sites including myspace.com.

Commendation to the dating service for conducting a background check and discovering the record to help others avoid falling into the trap of trusting this guy just because he seems nice on a dating service. Read the full article:

“Thanks to the background check, our Fugitive Unit was contacted and discovered that this registered sex offender failed to notify Wisconsin authorities

This situation is a lesson in doing your homework before you place any kind of trust in someone you meet online. As with this dating service, some sites conduct background checks, which give you some level of confidence. However, many networking sites don’t.
