Net Detective is a solution for conducting unlimited background searches, criminal records searches, etc. They are a  heavily used, and advertised, background check program that is only semi-useful. Their parent company HD Publishing Group has been in business for over 12 years, and claims to have 1.1 billion records indexed.

As with any service, Net Detective has issues. One major problem is that for the $29.95 - 3 year membership...one can really only acquire access to a people search utility. You can generally purchase a people search report for $5.00 or less, and services like USSearch offer a 24 hour unlimited search option for $7.45.

To upgrade to the advanced version of Net Detective you will have to shell out $29.95 per month. I have used both levels of service, and the advanced membership offers more extensive options. However...Net Detective is not on par with any of the other services I have reviewed. and I do NOT endorse it.

The offer a product which will work for many folks and the company also offers a 90 day money back guarantee so you can't go wrong. Give the service a try and if it doesn't find the records you need, simply request a refund. Of course this doesn't mean the system should be abused. We were recently booted from the Net Detective program because we aren't promoting this as the be-all and end-all of online background checks.

Cons:
  • Advertising is misleading as basic membership is basically only allows people search, landline search, SSN validation, etc.
  • Customer has to sign up for basic membership before being allowed to upgrade to the advanced version where you can do actual background checks at $29.95/month.
  • There are hundreds of reports from disgruntled customers all over the web; notably the Ripoff Report and BBB. Further scrutiny shows that HD Publishing is putting some effort into fixing the situation.
